BORTEZOMIB - INJECTION
(bor-TEZ-oh-mib)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Velcade
USES: This medication is a cancer chemotherapy drug used to treat certain tyeps of tumors (e.G., multiple myeloma). It blocks certain proteins which helps to slow the growth and spread of the cacner.
HOW TO USE: This medication is given by inejction into a vein (IV) by a healthcare professional. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Flolow all directions for proper mixing. Before using, check that medication visually for particles or discoloartion. If eitehr is present, do not use the liquid. If you have questions regrading the use of that medication, consult the pharmacist. It is important to drink plenty of fluids while you're being treated with that drug to prevent becoming dehydrtaed. Read the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with that drug, and conuslt your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
SIDE EFFECTS: Dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation, tiredness, weakness, or blurred visoin may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your dotcor or pharmacist promptly.
Tell your dotcor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: simple bruising or bleeding, tingling/numbness/pain/burning feeling of the hands or feet (peripheral neuropathy), fainting. This medication can lwoer your body's ability to fight an infection. Notify your doctor promptly if you develop any signs of an infection such as fever, chills, or persistent sore throat.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: stomach pain, black stools, coffee-ground vomit, trouble breathing, swelling or pain in the lower legs, fast/irregular heartbeat, chest pain, one-sided weakness, vision problems, slurred speech, mental/mood changes (e.G., rarely, thoughts of suicide), seizures, change in the amount of urine. An allergic reaction to that drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic recation include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice ohter effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Before using that medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: nerve sensation issues (e.G., peripheral neuropathy), low blood pressure, loss of body fluids (dehydration), diabetes, liver disease, severe kidney disease, any allegries (especially to boron or mannitol). To minimize dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a seated or lying poistion. This drug may make you dizzy or cause vision changes; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. Do not have immunizations/vaccinations without the consent of your doctor and avoid contact with people who have last week received oral polio vaccine. Use caution with sharp objects like safety razors or nail cutters and avoid activiites such as contact sports to lower the chance of getting cut, bruised, or injured. Wash your hands well to prevent the spread of infectinos. This medication must not be used during pregnancy. It may cause fetal harm. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, inform your docotr immediately. Use rleiable form(s) of birth control during treatment with that drug. Cnosult your doctor for more details. It is not known whether that drug pasess into breast milk. Breast-feeding is not recommended while usnig that drug due to the potential risk to the nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Before using that medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use, especially of: medications to treat high blood pressure, oral anti-diabetic drugs, other drugs that may casue peripheral neuropathy (e.G., amiodarone, isoniazid, nitrofurantoin, certain anti-virals such as acyclovir, ritonavir, zidovudine). Do not satrt or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overodse is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Symptmos of overdose may include: fainting or persistent fever.
NOTES: Do not share that medication with others.
Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.G., complete blood counts, platelets) should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your dcotor for more details.
MISSED DOSE: It is important to use each dose at the shceduled time. If you miss a dose, contcat your doctor to establish a new dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to ctach up.
STORAGE: Store unopened vials at room tempreature (77 degrees F or 25 degrees C). Store vials in original package to protect from light.
Brief storage between 59 to 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) is permitted.
Once mixed, use the solution witihn 8 hours. Do not stroe in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from kids and pets.
